Differential  Shafts Action principle and Application

Differential shaft(friction shaft,air friction controlled rewinding shaft).This shaft is used for rewinding and the special unwinding of slitter machine.Is controlled its friction torque by compressed air.

The differential shaft is structure by the mandrel and multiple sets of friction rings (differential rings).The friction ring can independent sliding,torque is controlled in central pressure or lateral transfer pressure.ensure every coil rewinding in a constant tension,it’s uniform and tidily from inside to outside diameter.

Slitter machine is divided the whole material roll to many coils.It is required that the tension shall be correctly controlled,and this is the guarantee for the extension of product rate and transverse uniformity.

What is differential winding?
In a standard winding environment, common sense might imply that each winding roll would take up its stream with consistent winding tension independent of length or diameter variations. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Differential winding is needed if baggy web length variations are significantly large relative to web strain. Higher-modulus baggy products, where it is difficult to simply pull out the bagginess, are more likely to need differential winding for baggy webs.

By using a GS Air Roll Lock Differential Shaft, each winding roll turns at the rpm appropriate for roll diameter and entering web length. GS Differential air shafts have an internal shaft driven faster than the winding rolls. GS clutched rollers regulate tension accurately for each individual roll.

GS who seek to improve efficiency by winding multiple width rolls on the same air shaft have typically approached differential winding with optimism, but have not always seen good results. This is due to poor shaft design. GS revolutionary air-roll-lock differential design changed the industry’s perspective on differential winding and allowed converters to improve efficiency and roll quality with an easy-to-use and effective design.

Because differential winding can be a sensitive and delicate operation, it’s vitally important that an air roll lock differential shaft operate at maximum efficiency with minimal effort. GS most recent upgrade to their differential shaft design has improved the GS clutched rollers by improving core grip while reducing the number of moving parts. This both improves efficiency and reduces the risk of damage to the air shaft.

The new improvements enhance the differential air shaft’s ability to allow rolls to slide easily on and off the shaft. When disengaged, the GS clutched rollers move freely, allowing operators to easily move cores and rolls along the shaft. Once engaged, the rollers lock independently in place and are able to control tensions from under .15 PLI on each individual core, regardless of each core’s width.

Differential Rewinding Shaft

GS differential rewind shaft works like a “shaft within a shaft”. Winding cores are mechanically locked onto one or multiple friction rings, depending on core width. When the outer race is rotated against the inner race of the friction ring, the expanding balls ride up cam ramps to center and grip the core. These friction rings then consistently slip like a clutch around a central shaft, which runs at an over speed RPM. Similar to a strip shaft, this central shaft contains air bladders and friction strips running along the shaft. Winding torque to the friction rings (and consequently to the cores and rolls) is controlled by adjusting the air pressure in the bladders. As the bladders expand, they press the friction strips out to exert force on the inner surface of the friction rings. Generally, as rolls build, air pressure is increased to deliver the proper winding torque. Because the web material may have variations within it, some rolls will slip more than others to creat uniformly wound rolls.

We have developed a full differential shaft system to overcome the problems on slitting machines associated with gauge variation across a web. The slitter rewind shaft is filled with a complete set of differential chucks so there is no need to position individual chucks each time the slit pattern changes.

The Universal differential chucks grip the inside of the core locking the chuck and core together.  Control of rewind torque is obtained by controlling the friction between the inside of the differential chuck and friction strips in the shaft it is running on. Not only does this provide precise control of tension regardless of slit width, it also ensures core dust is not generated as there is no slip between the core and the chucks on the slitter.  The design of the chucks enables easy loading of the cores and offloading of the reels, whilst locking the core into position to prevent sideways movement during winding

This differential friction shaft system is fitted on most new slitting rewinders supplied by Universal Converting Equipment and can also be retrofitted onto a wide range of slitting machines.

We have standard differential friction shaft systems that can be retro-fitted onto a range of machines including Titan, Atlas, Dusenbery, Elite, Cameron and Ashe slitter rewinders. When combined with a Converter Guide 4 Digital web guiding system, Computacore™ core alignment system, and Computaslit automatic knife positioning, a slitting machine changeover which may have taken one hour can be completed in less than five minutes.

range of Differential Shafts are designed to be easy to use and relatively maintenance free, ensuring the highest winding quality, even when rewinding very narrow rolls – down to 9mm in width. The Cores are gripped by Friction Rings which run on a central Hard Chromed shaft, with a relatively low coefficient of friction over which the friction rings can rotate. The tension ranges of the shafts can be varied by changing the expanding strip material of the centre shaft, which provides the slippage. By designing the rings to slip internally, common issues have been eliminated in comparison to other designs of Differential Rewind Shafts.
